Pochází z Dolního Rakouska nebo Chorvatska. Pro své pozdější dozrávání se pěstuje hlavně na Slovensku. Slupka bobulí obsahuje velké množství barviva. Réva se ve vinici odlisťuje pro dosažení vyšší zralosti. Vzhledem na vyšší obsah kyselin je Frankovka víno tvrdší.
Avšak správnou technologií a zabezpečením jablečno-mléčného kvašení je možné vyrobit Frankovku jemnou, lahodnou a plnou.
Příjemně doplňuje posezení při vydatnějších jídlech.
